Summary – Terahertz Conference 2011
Some 50 participants from 10 nations came to Villach to take part in the Terahertz Conference, November 2011. The international conference was organized by CTR Carinthian Tech Research, the largest research center in Carinthia.
Experts from Russia, the US, Italy, Germany, India, Iran, Switzerland, Austria, Armenia and Slovenia used the conference to disseminate recent advances and demonstrate novel applications of this cutting edge technology. Their presentations showed that the terahertz radiation has applications far beyond the “body-scanners” increasingly used in the airports.
Many materials, products or even pre-assembled modules can be inspected in great detail because terahertz techniques allow internal layers, inclusions, defects or cracks to be precisely visualized. This ability offers completely new possibilities for quality inspection in, for example, the automobile, plastics, pharmaceutical, semiconductor or photovoltaic industries. The conference gave a unique opportunity for networking and the development of novel ideas and applications for industry.

The Terahertz Conference provided an excellent platform for international experts in science and industry.
Terahertz techniques are on the brink of widespread commercialization—this was reflected in the fact that speakers were drawn from both academia and industry. Contributors included academics such as Luigi Bonacina from the University of Geneva, Juray Darmo from the Technical University of Vienna and Leon Pavlovic of the University of Lubjlana, as well as representatives of commercial companies such as Zhenyu Zhao from Femtolasers Produktions GmbH and Norman Laman from Zomega Terahertz Corporation (USA). The feedback of the participants was very positive and another conference is planned for next year.
